Rei Momo E-mail
The election of the Rei Momo (Carnival king) is a tradition in Brazilian carnival.  The mayor of the city opens official carnival celebrations by symbolically handing over of the key of the city to Rei Momo. The figure of the Carnival King goes back to Roman mythology. In Brazil the tradition began in the 1930s in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival Kings are typically quite fat, and some of them weigh over 200 kg. Until recently, candidates used to go on special fat diets to be eligible.
